Based out of Los Angeles by way of New England, Shelley Som is a visual storyteller who specializes in travel and documentary photography.  Her work is inspired by both a relentless wanderlust and a desire to discover and to communicate the unseen. Regardless of the subject matter, Som prefers the quiet, the candid, and the overlooked within any given moment. Her use of natural light similarly lends a striking authenticity and rawness to her prints.

Som first pursued her love of adventure by embarking upon a three-month solo backpacking tour of Southeast Asia. Starting in Cambodia, she explored the country’s singular landscape before crossing into Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. It was love at first sight and photography offered the perfect medium for capturing each new, exciting encounter. Som continued to finesse the skills that she taught herself abroad by incorporating photography into her daily experiences back home.

However, after once again itching for adventure, Som landed a month-long Photojournalism internship at The Rising Nepal- a local newspaper in Kathmandu, Nepal. Working alongside the Photo Editor, she helped collect a visual archive of the city’s vibrant customs and activities. Upon her return, she then decided to make the move from Boston to Los Angeles. From the cliffs of Big Sur to the deserts of the Mojave, Som continues to explore, and capture on film, the varied beauty of the Golden Coast. Inspired by the work of such fellow seekers as William Eggleston, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Sebastio Salgado, Steve McCurry, and Richard Avedon, her current portfolio encompasses not only documentary but also editorial, lifestyle, portrait, and product photography.

Shelley Som’s past clients include here’s looking at you, Target, Misa Jewelry, Beach House Creamery, and Incredible Things. While she currently resides in Los Angeles, ever the nomad, she is always available for international commission work.
